Although we moved already 2 years ago, the renovation of our house was so big that we hadn’t had the time to paint the kids’ rooms yet. I was in doubt which colours to choose, until I bought this stunning poster at IKEA. The birds gave me so much inspiration 🙂

I know it sounds strange, but I really went to the paint store with these birds in my mind: pink and pale olive green for Emilia, and for Lucie the same pale green combined with mint blue-green. I painted both colours in their rooms and kept the other 2 white.  But since they are kids, I found that suddenly too simple and clean… So decided to make templates.

Starting from cardboard, I cut out triangles for Lucie and lozenges for Emilia.You need to draw around them on the wall with a pencil, and then tape around the pencil. Don’t try to do it elsewise, trust me I tried and it becomes messy. I used several colours that matched the 2 coloured walls plus some extra gold, as a gold lover 🙂

This is the result in both rooms.

I just placed them without a  pattern like I wished, but of course you could also work with a fixed pattern. And as you can see, I also made matching curtains with the fantastic organic fabric from FairyTailors; both with fabulous gold paint.

This is how the rooms look further more.

Now I am planning on making their lighting! To be continued…

Since we bought our house at the countryside (in the beautiful village of Houtem, Belgium), we have a super big garden and plenty of space for vegetables, fruit and animals. But I like keeping my herbs close to the kitchen and I want to be inspired by the sight of these delicious tastemakers while cooking, so decided to make planters for the terrace that is next to the kitchen.

I chose pallet wood because it fits nicely with the blue stone we have at the terrace. I started from the boxes we had delivered to carry the blue stone tiles. A handy size to start from, I actually just had to saw them in two, and add extra wooden beams. But you could perfectly imitate this with two pallets. You would then need 2 pallets: one for the front and the other cut in two for the sides. You don’t necessarily need a bottom; the root foil will ‘hang’ like a bag anyway.

I could place three of them next to each other, leaning against the outer wall. I strenghtened the frame at the back with some extra wooden beams. And then added the root foil, which lets the water go through. I fixed the edges of the foil to the wood with a stapler.

To mask the edges of the foil and to make the upper side look more attractive, I added a wooden frame at the top, cut in an angle of 45 degrees. Nailed everything and oiled the wood to protect it. It doesn’t look perfect but I like the rough look.

I filled it up with soil from the garden and potting soil. Potting soil alone is too light and dries too quickly. And then fill up with your favourite herbs and flowers!

We really had a problem storing our shoes. My hubby is a skaterboy and has a shoe collection that is uncomparable to the one of the average woman.  I don’t know about you, but all the shoe racks we came across are made for 10 pair of shoes or so… I am sorry but that is not even coming close to what we have to store- even not when we buy 3 of such things.

So DIY mummy decided to build one her own. This is the result:

I wanted something BIG, that would at least partly hide the content. So no wood open rack, and looking on Pinterest I was inspired by this PVC shoe rack. It is super nice and white, but I wanted to make it with symmetric rows.

This is how I started: buying 20cm wide PVC pipes here, I figured that was wide enough to fit most pairs of shoes (both of them in one whole), which turned out fine.  Since I wanted a big rack, I bought 4 pipes of 5m, which allowed to make 11 rows of 6 pieces. The pipes are unfortunately quite expensive; don’t forget to also buy special (read: chemical!!) hard PVC glue in a pot; I needed 2 of them.

The sawing is quite a job; you need to measure round and round very precisely (I took 29cm deep).  And then you need to make a scission with the hand saw for your jig saw to be able to go in. The plastic here was 5mm thick so quite heavy to saw the whole way around – 66 times 🙂

Glueing is the fun part. Mind that you apply the glue to both side of the surface. I was surprised by how solid the glue made the whole rack… which in the end doesn’t need any side shelf. I supported the free side with some blocks, while the glue was drying. The whole rack stands on its own and doesn’t move to the sides. Only, if you make it as high as mine (220cm), you should secure the top of the rack to the wall. I fixed that with 2 L-hooks, invisible and easy as can be.

 

And I am so happy! It blends well in the interior of our hallway. I doubted to paint it, but in the end I like the industrial look.

What I like is that it partly hides the shoes. From the front side of course not, but when entering the hallway and seeing it from the side, doesn’t give the messy rack feeling.

The kids love it too, it makes putting away shoes funny and easy. And oh yes, we still had to put some pairs somewhere else… I’ll have to have a talk with  my husband 🙂

DIY, Naaien

Mijn mama is net zo’n verzamelaar als ik. En dus hield ze bijna al ons speelgoed bij voor de kleinkinderen. Supertof, enig probleem: ik groeide op in de jaren tachtig en die waren niet altijd een toonbeeld van schoonheid. Paars, roze, appelblauwzeegroen: wauw! Zo ook de poppenwieg en -kast die ik doorkreeg:

Maar ze waren beiden van vol hout en in goede staat, dus ik besloot ze te schilderen en de bekleding opnieuw te naaien. Een design wiegje als deze is de max maar ik vind het persoonlijk zijn prijs niet waard. Langs de andere kant: met twee meisjes in huis zal die wieg nog wel een tijdje in onze living staan dus het moest wel blijvend mooi worden. Ik ontmandelde de wieg en zijn bekleding.

Het geraamte was inderdaad nog mooi, en schilderde ik met lakverf en een lakborstel wit

De kussens, matrasje, dekentje en wiegkap mat ik na en maakte ik na in de bedrukte stof van de opbergzak (ecru canvas met gouden verf), en een katoentje van Michael Miller dat er mooi bij past.

Uiteindelijk besloot ik de bekleding aan de zijkant van de wieg weg te laten, omdat het een detailwerkje was met veel biaislint en rimpeldraden. En eigenlijk vond ik het soberder ook wel mooier. De pop ligt er graag in alleszins 🙂

Helemaal in de ban van het goud besloot ik het kastje helemaal goud te schilderen. Dat deed ik met een spuitbus omdat je met die metallic lakken anders te veel de borstelstrepen ziet. En ik had nog een halfvolle gele spuitbus dus besloot die als grondlaag te zetten om dat lelijk roze te dekken en mijn goud te sparen voor verdere projecten.

Ik schilderde de eendjes wit en voegde een prinsessenkroon toe – het blijft een poppenkleerkast.

Samen met de opbergzak wel een leuk geheeltje, vind ik.

En Millie vindt dat ook.

En esthetisch gezien leef ik toch liever in 2017 dan in 1987 🙂

Het hoeft voor mij geen Kerstmis te zijn om goud te gebruiken, integendeel: goud is overal bij ons thuis. Maar het is wel het perfecte excuus om te overdrijven. En dat is wat ik deed voor de tafeldecoratie van het kerstfeest voor de familie bij ons thuis.

Ik maakte met een spuitbus goudverf van Brico (metallic verf in een potje schildert niet zo mooi) en een pot diertjes van de Hema, een gouden jungle op tafel! 

Bij ieder bord een diertje, daar kunnen ook veel mopjes rond gemaakt worden aan de kerstdis (mijn mama koos de ‘panter’)

 

Ik vond gouden kaarsen, ook bij Hema, en bij gebrek aan mooie passende kandelaars besloot ik glazen flessen te beschilderen. Het mooiste is flesjes van verschillende groottes vind ik, zodat de kaarsen ongelijk komen.

Etiketten goed afweken, aluminium of plastieke dopversieringen wegknippen, en dan ook weer spuitlak gebruiken. Ik gebruikte het gebroken wit waarmee ik ook de stoelen ooit deed.

En dan verder rolde ik gewoon muntgroene servetten van ik denk Ikea op tot een rolletje, gouden lintje er rond, en kaneelstokje erdoor. Het muntgroen past ideaal bij de glazen flesjes voor de kids en onze bacardi-glazen. En onze muur natuurlijk!
